What is a paediatric dentist?
A paediatric dentist is dedicated to improving the oral health of children from birth to age 16. They treat children with specific dental problems, special needs or complex medical histories, who need time, skill and consideration. Paediatric dentists have pursued advanced training to understand children and provide the most positive experience when visiting the dentist. They focus on prevention, early detection and treatment of dental problems. Children can be anxious of dental treatment either due to their age, complexity of treatment or a previous unpleasant experience. In these cases a paediatric dentist can provide treatment under sedation or work with the child to acclimatise them to dental treatment. A paediatric dentist also works closely with orthodontic colleagues if early intervention is required to straighten teeth.

FAQs for Paediatric Dentistry
Your dentist may have referred you to our specialist centre because they feel your child’s dental needs require specialist opinion or management. Your child may have a specific dental problem or complex medical history best managed by a specialist.
Primary (baby) teeth are important for multiple reasons. They help children speak clearly, chew and maintain space for the permanent (adult) teeth to erupt. Children start to loose primary teeth from around 6 years old, until they are 12 years old. If primary teeth have decay which is left untreated this can cause pain, infection, dental abscess or early loss of teeth. This can lead to space loss and even cause orthodontic problems in the future. It is important to remember that early intervention can help prevent more complex procedure later on.
Mali will ask questions to understand your child’s dental and medical history and discuss any concerns you may have. Following a detailed examination, she may take radiographs (x-rays) if indicated and then discuss a treatment plan. Often when patients come to see us they may be anxious initially, but we aim to make it a child-friendly environment and with a positive introduction to our team and practice. Mali will also assess co-operation levels of your child and offer sedation if necessary.
